What Are Tony Stark’s Glasses – A Look Across MCU

Robert Downey Jr has run through several glasses throughout the course of playing the Tony Stark character. In fact, Tony Stark has become synonymous with specific trendy shades, both in the movies and in comics. Now, Tony Stark glasses have become a part of pop culture. Let’s run through some of the most iconic eyeglasses worn by Tony Stark throughout his lifetime in the MCU.

Iron Man (2008): Ray-Ban 3320

Iron Man (2008): Ray-Ban 3320

We begin with the iconic 2008 film "Iron Man". This was the first movie to really endear us to the MCU, and the unfolding stories of the timeline. Tony Stark, made a bold statement not only with his advanced Iron Man suit but also with his choice of eyewear. The most iconic for us was the Ray-Ban 3320 sunglasses, which became synonymous with Stark's suave and sophisticated style. With its sleek aviator design and durable metal frame, the Ray-Ban 3320 exuded the perfect blend of functionality and fashion.

Tony Stark's effortless pairing of these sunglasses with his high-tech Iron Man suit added a touch of elegance to his superhero persona. The Ray-Ban 3320 sunglasses, featuring graduated brown lenses and a burnt chrome frame with brushed metal arms, showcased Stark's impeccable taste. Oliver Peoples’—Corsair sunglasses also made a brief appearance in the movie and deserves an honorable mention.

Iron Man 2 (2010): Initium Superunknown

In the sequel, "Iron Man 2," Tony Stark continued to make a style statement with the Initium Superunknown sunglasses. This was the first time RDJ wore sunglasses from the Initum brand, and it was a collaboration that lasted right up to Avengers: Endgame. This was also when people started catching on to Tony Stark's charismatic personality and impeccable taste in eyeglasses. Superunknown has an array of frame and lens color options like gray frames with light gray gradient lenses.

Another pair of Ironman glasses worn by Tony Stark in the Iron Man 2 movie was the VonZipper Fulton sunglasses. With their bold frames and vibrant colors, the VonZipper Fulton glasses deserve an honorable mention on our list.

The Avengers (2012): Oliver Peoples—Bernardo (Storm Gray)

2012 gave us our first Avengers movie, and it was a smash hit. Tony Stark didn’t disappoint us with his choice of classy sunglasses either. He once again showed his impeccable eyewear selection with the Oliver Peoples—Bernardo in Storm Gray. It featured a stylish handcrafted plastic frame with a modified square shape.

The threat of alien invasion did nothing to reduce how the subtle yet sophisticated storm gray frames perfectly complemented Stark's classic style.

Iron Man 3 (2013): Matsuda MS3023

Matsuda MS3023

Iron Man 3 rounded up the Iron Man trilogy and was the highest-rated of all the Iron Man solo movies. It was the first movie from the MCU’s Phase 2 and came in 2013. Like other movies that featured the Tony Stark character, we were treated to another set of Tony Stark glasses. It’s safe to say MCU’s metal armored knight finished his solo trilogy in style.

Our favorite pair of IronMan glasses from this movie is the Matsuda MS3023. This was one of the many aviator-style eyeglasses RDJ wore while playing the Tony Stark character. In the movie, Tony Stark wore a matte black and gold plated frame sunglasses. Its double bridge design is like the Dita Flight.006 and Initium All-In sunglasses (more on these later).

While he didn’t wear this in the movie, we’d like to mention the Vincent Chase Black Blue Full Rim geometric sunglasses RDJ wore to the Iron Man 3 premiere in 2013. The double-bridge hexagonal sunglasses are another headline-grabbing pair in the long list of glasses sported by our classy actor.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015): Initium All-In (Black)

Another movie where the threat of humanity’s total extinction didn’t deter Tony Stark from looking as stylish as ever. This time, we’ll focus on the black Initium All-In sunglasses he wore at some point in the movie. RDJ’s appearance in these eye-catching square aviator glasses was a hit for us. Stark wore a version with black lenses and a frame. Tony wore a red-tipped version in this movie, but he wore a black-tipped pair in Iron Man 2. By now, you should have figured out that Ton Stark loves aviator-styled sunglasses.

Our honorable mention in this movie goes to Gunnar Vayper glasses. These beautiful eyeglasses are actually not sunglasses. They’re gaming glasses, made for use while sitting in front of electronic screens for long periods. The amber-tinted glasses have blue light filtering ability, which is probably why Tony Stark used them while in front of a screen in the movie.

Captain America: Civil War (2016): Initium Police

Initium and Marvel took their collaboration to a whole new level with the release of the Initium Police sunglasses for Captain America: Civil War. For such an iconic moment, only an iconic pair of glasses will do, and the Initium Police doesn’t disappoint. This sunglasses had an aviator-square frame and had two tones. The upper part of the frame and arms were clear, while the lower parts were black. It also had red lenses.

This pair of sunglasses really combined well with Stark’s dress of gray suit and red tie in the movie. It gave his attire just the right dash of playfulness.

Our honorable mention in this movie goes to Paul Smith PM8191S Cortland. This stunning sunglasses featuring wayfarer-style frames had gray lenses of polarized uniform tint. It also paired well with his black suit in the movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): Silhouette TNG (5227) 6050 (custom-made)

Marvel decided to ditch its past two versions of Spiderman and start from scratch with Spider-Man: Homecoming. This reboot featured Tom Holland taking up the mantle of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger. The movie was a smash hit, and Robert Downey Jr played a role in its success with his cameo as Iron Man.

Our favorite pair of Tony Stark glasses is the Silhouette The Next Generation (TNG) rimless blue shades. The shades in the movie are a custom version of the TNG (5227) 6050 eyeglasses, and the version available in the market has clear lenses. Silhouette made these blue lenses for Tony Stark and highlighted that these custom lenses had a calming aura, and reflected confidence and intelligence. These are attributes we associate with the ever-stylish man in an iron suit.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019): Dita Flight.006

Dita Flight.006

These two epic movies featured Tony Stark donning a slew of trendy shades as usual, but none deserve more recognition than the Dita Flight.006. This Tony Stark glasses was the pair of glasses shown to interface with his AI, E.D.I.T.H, which is short for ‘Even Dead, I’m The Hero’. It was also the eyeglasses Stark passed on to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the movie “Spiderman: Far From Home”.

The Dita Flight.006 sunglasses are absolutely gorgeous. It’s an aviator-style sunglasses with modern touches like a titanium brow bar, bridge piece, temples, and front frame. The tips are made with beta-titanium material.

What Frames Shape Of Glasses Tony Stark’s Wear Most?

In all honesty, Tony Stark and Robert Downey Jr were a match made in heaven. RDJ  brought the Tony Stark character to life and created so much fan base for him—both in comics and in the movies. RDJ’s impact is so profound that his version of Tony Stark now influences the comic book version.

When an actor embodies a character to that extent, it’s only natural that some of their attributes merge. And in this case, it’s their taste for sophisticated eyeglasses. Tony Stark is known for statement glasses that speak volumes of his class and enhance his overall ensemble. The same can be said of RDJ, always to be found wearing a trendy pair of glasses at every gala, or red carpet.

While RDJ and Tony Stark have worn several eyeglasses over time, one trend is common. They both love tinted glasses. However, while Tony Stark prefers aviator-styled sunglasses, RDJ’s preferences are more varied. RDJ seems to favor retro square eyeglasses, rectangular glasses, and wayfarer eyeglasses. Although he does mix it up once in a while, and spore a unique pair of eyeglasses.
